7/11/09 thru 7/25/2009

The Delaware Riverkeeper Network is partnering with Aquarius Spring!TM in planning three volunteer-based litter clean-ups along the Delaware River waterfront. Aquarius Spring!TM is partnering with community organizations who are dedicated to making a difference in water conservation across the U.S The targeted locations and dates in our area are:

• Petty's Island, Pennsauken, NJ on July 11, 2009 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.... MAP

• Fish Hatchery,Northeast Philadelphia on July 18, 2009 9:30 am to 12:30 pm ... MAP

• John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, Philadelphia on July 25, 2009 9:30 am to 12:30 pm... MAP

We are working in close partnership with the property owners of each of these sites - CITGO Petroleum, Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service respectively.
We are hoping to recruit between 50-75 volunteers for each clean-up. Each clean-up is expected to last 3 hours. All volunteers will be asked to wear long sleeved shirt, long pants, water proofed heavy boots, insect repellant, a hat and work gloves. Additional work gloves will be available on site. All trash will be bagged and discarded in a dumpster.

Each site has been closely scouted by Delaware Riverkeeper Network staff for appropriateness for volunteer activities. There will be on-site supervisors for each work site to ensure volunteer safety. A safety instruction, including picking up broken glass, lifting heavy items, poison ivy and other potential hazards. Each site will have a fully-stocked first aid kit and each is well-known sites in the unlikely event that emergency response is needed.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the clean ups should get in touch with Fred at 215-369-1188 x 113, fred@delawareriverkeeper.org

Annual Native Plant Sale
Saturday May 1, 2010

8am to 12noon
Golden Nugget Market
1850 River Road
Lambertville, NJ 08530

Every year when the weather warms and we turn our attention out-of-doors , many of us begin to contemplate our gardens. Did you know that the decisions we make for our gardens and backyards can have tremendous impacts on our River and our neighbors? Typical suburban lawns contribute to increased flooding, drought, and water pollution. Lawns provide little food and no habitat for the birds and wildlife that are becoming increasingly desperate for safe havens to rest, feed and simply coexist.

We can do a great deal to protect the rivers and the communities they support by the simple act of planting native plants. Plants native to the Mid-Atlantic region are adapted to grow here. When you include them in your yard, you are helping to ensure their survival as well as the survival of the birds, animals and insects that depend upon them.

To help you develop a native plant garden (and perhaps begin to replace some or all of your lawn with native trees, shrubs or flowering plants) the Delaware Riverkeeper Network holds an annual native plant sale. Our sale is held on the first weekend in May every year at the Golden Nugget Flea Market near Lambertville, New Jersey. We offer a wide selection of beautiful ferns, grasses, herbaceous perennials, shrubs and trees, all gathered from regional nurseries.

At each year's sale, our stream restoration staff and plant experts are on hand with a wealth of information on choosing, planting and growing native species. So whether you are a first time customer or an avid gardener, you'll be able to learn design, cultivation, and care techniques for natives. Until next year's sale, we encourage you to look over our 2009 Native Plant Sale Guide and Catalog which is packed with information and resources useful all year long. The 2009 plant sale list also serves as guide to the types of plants you can expect to find at our 2010 sale. And we're always open to your suggestions of native plants you'd like added to our sale.

Our native plant sale also helps to raise money, through the sale of plants as well as sponsorship opportunities, to support our work to protect the River. Sponsorship opportunities are available at the $25, $50, and $100 levels. Please consider becoming a sponsor for our 2010 native plant sale. For more information, please call us at 215-369-1188.
