Yes, it is true, even though you probably haven’t heard about the plan to ship LNG from the Delaware River overseas, New Fortress Energy is proposing to bring Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to New Jersey from Pennsylvania for export from the Gibbstown Logistics Center located in Gibbstown, Greenwich Township, New Jersey. The Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) has hastily called a public hearing at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2019, at the West Trenton Volunteer Fire Company, 40 West Upper Ferry Road, Ewing, NJ.

Be warned that DRBC may not talk at the Hearing about the proposed LNG export or the plans to truck and rail the LNG to the marine terminal because the company and the developer of the site have kept this use under wraps and there is NOTHING in the DRBC’s proposed permit about LNG. The public has not been informed and even some agencies have not received the plans for the LNG use at the site. The project has moved ahead in secret.

But investigations into New Fortress Energy’s plans at the site and their proposed LNG processing facility in Bradford County, PA has revealed an intention by site developers, owners, and/or operators to develop and use this site as, at least in part, an LNG export facility.

Tell DRBC they should CANCEL this proposed Hearing and withdraw the proposed approval for lack of critical information about LNG!

By rights, this Hearing should be cancelled due to the lack of information about the intended LNG use. Original applications for the terminal include export of Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) and other products but no documents discussed the export of Liquefied Natural Gas, as recently as March 2019. The Hearing is set to only consider a permit for a new dock, berths and dredging at the terminal, detailed in the draft docket: https://www.nj.gov/drbc/library/documents/dockets/061219/2017-009-2draft.pdf

LNG is a hazardous material, dangerous to handle and store, bringing with it the hazards of a spill and release. If LNG liquid is released it creates a serious safety hazard for those around. LNG gas clouds expand to 600 times the amount of liquid and can travel many miles if not ignited. Spills that catch on fire bring with them serious risk of burn – second degree burns within 30 seconds for those exposed within a mile. LNG can cause a catastrophic BLEVE or Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion. And carrying LNG hundreds of miles on PA and NJ roads? Transporting LNG by truck and rail entails safety risks similar to bomb trains and has not been fully vetted by responsible agencies; accidents are occurring with truck transport today and rail car design has not even been approved yet by the overseeing agencies. In addition, what about the climate impacts of extracting, processing, and moving fracked gas, another dirty fossil fuel? New Fortress’s plans for LNG must be halted and fully disclosed and assessed in the light of day.

The DRBC Hearing should be cancelled immediately. We don’t need more fossil fuels or more fracking in PA, and Gibbstown and the Delaware River is no place for LNG! Please join us to protest LNG June 6!
