The PennEast Pipeline Company proposed to build a 114-mile large scale natural gas pipeline through Luzerne, Carbon, Northampton, and Bucks County in Pennsylvania and Hunterdon County in New Jersey. It was announced on August 12, 2014 and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted the project a certificate on February 20, 2018.
The Delaware Riverkeeper Network challenged the pipeline project every step of the way, petitioning the Delaware River Basin Commission to exercise its authority over the project, taking legal action over FERC’s approval of the project and pressuring NJDEP and PADEP to reject any water quality permits.
In September 2021, the PennEast Pipeline Company announced the development of the project was no longer supported and finally on December 16, 2021, FERC rescinded their certification for the pipeline, officially ending the project.
