Nuclear Powered Hydrogen - Webinar

July 31, 2024

What does it mean to produce hydrogen using nuclear energy? What are impacts and the costs?

Please join us Wednesday, July 31 at 6:30pm for a virtual webinar session with two nuclear experts. Dr. Desmond Kahn, specializing in fishery ecology, has published research into the impact of the Salem Nuclear Generating Station on the fish populations of the Delaware River and Bay. Dr. Arjun Makhijani, President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER), is an engineer specializing in nuclear fusion with studies on the nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear waste. They will walk us through the ramifications of the use of nuclear energy for hydrogen production, a required energy source planned for the MACH2 Hydrogen Hub.

Dr. Kahn has authored many papers on marine fish species and focused on the Delaware and Chesapeake Bay fish populations during his career at the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife. Today he consults with Fishery Investigations as an independent researcher. Two of his published papers are “The Destructive Impact of the Once-Through Cooling System of the Salem Nuclear Generating Station on the Ecosystem and Fish Populations of the Delaware River, 2020.” and “Mortality of Delaware River Striped Bass from Entrainment and Impingement by the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, 2000.”

Most recently, Dr. Makhijani has authored Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free: A Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy (IEER Press), the first analysis of a transition to a U.S. economy based completely on renewable energy, without any use of fossil fuels or nuclear power. He is the principal editor of Nuclear Wastelands and the principal author of Mending the Ozone Hole, both published by MIT Press. We will also have a brief update on the proposed MACH2 Hydrogen Hub planned for Delaware, Southeastern Pennsylvania, and South/Central New Jersey.
